### Global Warming: Causes, Effects and What India Is Doing to Fight It

Global warming is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing the world today. Rising temperatures are affecting weather patterns, agriculture, water resources, ecosystems, human health and economies. While climate change is a global issue, countries such as India are taking steps to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and strengthen climate resilience.

**What Is Global Warming?**

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature, primarily driven by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane and nitrous oxide trap heat in the atmosphere. Human activities—particularly the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, deforestation and certain industrial and agricultural activities—have significantly increased these concentrations.

Global warming is closely connected to climate change, which includes broader changes in temperature, rainfall, extreme weather, oceans and ecosystems.

#### What Causes Global Warming?

The major human-related causes include:

**Burning Fossil Fuels**

Coal, oil and natural gas are widely used for electricity, transportation, industries and other activities. Their combustion releases large amounts of greenhouse gases.

**Transportation**

Cars, buses, trucks, ships and aircraft that use fossil fuels contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions.

**Industrial Activities**

Manufacturing, construction and other industrial processes can produce significant greenhouse-gas emissions.

**Deforestation**

Forests absorb carbon dioxide. When forests are cleared or degraded, carbon stored in vegetation and soils can be released, while the Earth's capacity to absorb CO₂ is reduced.

**Agriculture and Land Use**

Agriculture and livestock can generate greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Changes in land use can also affect carbon storage.

##### How Does Global Warming Affect the Planet?

- As temperatures rise, climate-related risks can become more severe. Some major impacts include:
- More frequent and intense heatwaves
- Changes in rainfall patterns
- Increased risks from flooding and sea-level rise
- Greater risk of some wildfires
- Water stress and drought in vulnerable regions
- Impacts on agriculture and food security
- Pressure on biodiversity and ecosystems
- Increased risks to human health

**Changes to glaciers, snow and mountain ecosystems**

The impacts are not experienced equally. Communities with fewer resources to prepare for and recover from climate-related events can face greater risks.

###### How Is Global Warming Linked to Extreme Weather?

A warmer atmosphere can influence the water cycle and weather patterns. Warmer air can hold more moisture, potentially contributing to heavier rainfall in some situations, while increased evaporation can worsen dry conditions in others.

Climate change does not mean that every individual weather event is caused by global warming. However, scientific research shows that climate change can alter the likelihood or intensity of several types of extreme weather.

**What Is India Doing to Fight Global Warming?**

Yes. India has several national and state-level programmes addressing climate change through both mitigation and adaptation.

**1. National Action Plan on Climate Change**

India's National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) provides an overarching framework for climate action. It includes national missions covering areas such as solar energy, energy efficiency, water, sustainable agriculture, the Himalayan ecosystem, sustainable habitats, forests and climate-related knowledge.

**2. National Solar Mission**

India is promoting solar energy as part of its transition toward cleaner energy sources. Expanding renewable energy can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse-gas emissions.

**3. National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency**

Improving energy efficiency can reduce energy consumption and emissions while helping industries, businesses and households use resources more efficiently.

**4. National Mission for a Green India**

The National Mission for a Green India focuses on improving forest and tree cover and strengthening ecosystem services, contributing to carbon sequestration and climate resilience.

**5. State Action Plans on Climate Change**

Climate risks vary considerably across India. The government therefore supports State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCCs), which translate national climate priorities into state-specific strategies based on local vulnerabilities and development needs.

**6. Climate Change and Human Health**

India also has a national framework addressing the health impacts of climate change. The National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health focuses on areas including awareness, capacity building, surveillance of climate-sensitive diseases, stronger health systems and climate-resilient healthcare facilities.

**What Can Individuals Do?**

Government policies and international cooperation are essential, but individual and community actions also have a role.

You can help by:

- Saving electricity and using energy-efficient appliances
- Choosing public transport, walking or cycling when practical
- Reducing unnecessary consumption
- Reusing and recycling materials
- Avoiding food waste
- Supporting renewable energy where practical
- Planting and protecting trees and local ecosystems
- Conserving water
- Supporting sustainable products and businesses
- Learning about climate change and encouraging climate-conscious policies

**India's Climate Challenge**

India faces a particularly complex climate challenge because it must continue improving economic development, livelihoods and access to energy while reducing climate risks and emissions. India's climate strategy therefore combines mitigation, adaptation, sustainable development and climate resilience. India's NAPCC explicitly recognises the need to protect vulnerable communities while pursuing sustainable development.

**Global Warming Requires Collective Action**

Global warming is not a problem that can be solved by one country, organisation or individual. Governments, industries, communities and citizens all have roles to play.

India has established national missions and state-level climate action plans to address both the causes and impacts of climate change. At the same time, continued investment in clean energy, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, resilient infrastructure, ecosystem protection and climate-aware development will remain important.

**The Future Starts With the Choices We Make Today**

Understanding global warming is the first step. Reducing emissions, protecting nature, using resources responsibly and supporting sustainable solutions can help create a healthier and more resilient future for India and the world.
