### Innovative system could transform the transportation of live aquatic species with up to 95% survival

Transporting live fish and other aquatic species over long distances has traditionally required large quantities of water, continuous aeration, filtration, cooling systems, and substantial packaging. These requirements increase transport weight, energy consumption, operating costs, and the risk of losses during transit.

A new innovation from the ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi, could offer a more sustainable solution.

ICAR-CIFT has been granted an Indian patent for an innovative technology titled “A System and a Corresponding Method for Waterless Live Transportation of Aquatic Species.” The technology is designed to make live aquatic transportation more efficient, cost-effective and less dependent on conventional water-based transportation systems.

**A New Approach to Live Aquatic Transportation**

The patented system addresses several challenges associated with transporting live aquatic species, including:

The high weight and cost of transporting water

The need for separate aeration systems

Dependence on filtration and cooling equipment

Continuous power requirements

Extensive use of plastic bags and packaging materials

Stress and mortality associated with conventional transportation

Higher transportation costs over long distances

Instead of relying on conventional transportation methods, the new system uses controlled hyperbaric-hypothermic conditions—combining elevated pressure and reduced temperature—to place aquatic species in a controlled, low-activity state during transportation.

**How Does the ICAR-CIFT Technology Work?**

The technology is built around an insulated transportation container equipped with suitable holding arrangements and monitoring systems for aquatic species.

The process can broadly be understood in four stages:

**1. Hypothermic Anesthetization**

The temperature is gradually reduced in accordance with the requirements of the particular aquatic species.

The controlled reduction in temperature helps prevent thermal shock and excessive stress during the preparation and transportation process.

**2. Dormant or Low-Activity State**

As the temperature decreases, the aquatic species enter a calmer, low-activity state.

Their metabolic activity and oxygen requirements decrease, helping them remain stable during transportation and reducing the need for conventional support systems.

**3. Controlled Transportation**

The aquatic species can then be transported in the specially designed controlled container for a period of up to 12 hours, according to the experimental demonstrations described for the technology.

The system is designed to reduce dependence on heavy water loads, chemicals and separate aeration equipment, potentially making transportation easier and more energy efficient.

**4. Revival**

Once the aquatic species reach their destination, they can be gradually returned to suitable environmental conditions.

As temperature and other conditions return to the appropriate range, the animals can recover from the low-activity state and become active again.

**Smart Sensors for Real-Time Monitoring**

One of the most important features of the patented system is its integrated monitoring and control mechanism.

Sensors can continuously monitor critical environmental parameters, including:

Temperature

Oxygen levels

Humidity

The system can store predefined threshold values and compare them with real-time sensor readings.

If any parameter moves outside the desired range, the system can generate an alert, allowing operators to take corrective action.

The technology also supports both manual and automatic modes of operation, providing greater flexibility during transportation.

**Up to 95% Survival Rate in Experiments**

Experimental demonstrations conducted with different aquatic species produced promising results, with survival rates of up to 95%.

This is particularly significant for the fisheries and aquaculture industries, where mortality during transportation can directly affect the income of farmers, traders and other stakeholders.

Higher survival rates could help reduce transportation losses while enabling live aquatic species to reach markets in better condition.

**Key Benefits of the Patented Technology**

**High Survival Rate**

Experimental trials reported survival rates of up to 95%, demonstrating the potential of the technology for live aquatic transportation.

**Reduced Transportation Burden**

Reducing dependence on large volumes of water can significantly lower the weight and logistical burden associated with transporting live aquatic species.

**Lower Energy Requirements**

The system is designed to be less power-intensive than conventional transportation approaches that require continuous aeration, cooling and filtration.

**Smart Monitoring**

Integrated sensors allow operators to monitor oxygen, humidity and temperature and receive alerts when conditions move beyond predefined limits.

**Reduced Packaging Dependence**

The technology could reduce reliance on conventional plastic bags and other transportation packaging materials.

**Chemical-Free Transportation**

The system offers the potential to transport aquatic species without relying on chemicals for maintaining their condition during transit.

**Better Market Opportunities**

Improved survival during transportation could help farmers and traders deliver fresh, live aquatic products to markets while reducing losses.

**Who Developed the Technology?**

The patented invention was developed by a multidisciplinary team of scientists from ICAR-CIFT:

**Dr. Parvathy U.**

**Dr. B. Madhusudhana Rao**

**Dr. Murali S.**

**Dr. Binsi P. K.**

**Dr. Sathish Kumar K.**

**Mr. Vishnu R. Nair**

**Mr. Jithin Joy T.**

Their work combines expertise in fisheries technology, aquatic transportation, environmental control and monitoring systems.

**What Could This Mean for Fisheries and Aquaculture?**

The transportation of live aquatic species is an important part of the fisheries and aquaculture value chain. Fish farmers, hatcheries, traders and seafood businesses often need to move live species safely between farms, production facilities, markets and other locations.

Traditional transportation methods can become expensive and complicated because of the need to maintain suitable water quality, oxygen levels and temperature throughout the journey.

The ICAR-CIFT innovation could help address some of these challenges by creating a more controlled, compact and resource-efficient transportation environment.

If further validated and commercialised across different species and transportation conditions, the technology could have applications in areas such as:

Live fish transportation

Aquaculture supply chains

Fish seed and hatchery transportation

Ornamental fish transportation

Fisheries logistics

Long-distance aquatic animal transport

Sustainable seafood distribution

**A Step Towards More Sustainable Aquatic Transportation**

The ICAR-CIFT patent represents an interesting development in fisheries technology and sustainable aquaculture.

By combining hypothermic conditions, controlled pressure, insulated containers and real-time sensor monitoring, the technology aims to reduce some of the major challenges associated with conventional live aquatic transportation.

With experimental survival rates reaching up to 95%, the innovation offers promising possibilities for reducing transit losses, lowering transportation requirements and improving the efficiency of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

**Innovation That Could Change How Live Fish Are Transported**

From reducing water and energy requirements to introducing smart monitoring and improving survival, the patented ICAR-CIFT technology demonstrates how science and engineering can address practical challenges in India's fisheries sector.

As demand for efficient and sustainable aquaculture continues to grow, innovations such as this could play an important role in building smarter, greener and more reliable aquatic supply chains.

ICAR-CIFT's innovation is more than a new transportation system—it is a potential step towards the future of sustainable live aquatic transportation.
